Evans Center Puts
Training to the Test
MidTown - March 19,
2000 --- The live burn drill started at 8am on Sunday,
March 19th at Evans Center’s Station #1 in Evans NY. With assistance from NYS
Fire Instructor Bill Hanrahan and NFPA certified instructor Kevin Lozano,
approximately 30 volunteer firefighters from Evans Center, Eden Highland
Hose and North Boston set out to do live fire evolutions and eventually a terminal burn on Evans
Center’s mobile home trailer in their own training facility.
Utilizing just hay, pallets and furniture as
fuel, five extremely hot, smoky fires in the trailer's two bedrooms and bathroom
gave participating firefighters the next best thing to the real thing before
fires in the kitchen and living area were left to engulf the structure.
Crews from the three departments joined forces to practice fire attack, exterior
truck, and search and rescue operations in the training trailer. The
entire training experience was extremely positive and motivating for the fire
crews. Scene safety and effective communications were stressed throughout the
drill.
The terminal burn reduced the trailer to its
frame and associated scrap metal debris. The live burn exercise paves the way
for a new training trailer to be delivered as a donation from Triton Valley
Estates later this year. Evans Center protects approximately 600 mobile homes in
three trailer parks in their district.
The
real test came about two hours after the drill was completed. Evans Center and
Highland were dispatched for a working structure fire on Erie Rd. near the
Care-A-Lot day care center. Evans Center’s Engine 1 responded with
firefighters from Eden and Evans Center - still at the hall mopping up from the
drill. Hanrahan rode with Evans Center’s Chief Dennis Allen and manned the
attack line with Asst. Chief John Latimore. The freshly trained crews made an aggressive
assault and a quick knock on the second floor bedroom fire. The crews
were in and out in a matter of minutes with a textbook attack to their credit.
Crews
from Highland and North Evans assisted in the overhaul operations. The Erie
County Sheriffs Fire Investigation unit was called in to assist in the cause
determination.
