Early Easter Fire Results
in Double Death
Two Cousins Perish

Lake Erie Beach and Evans Center Volunteer Fire Fighters were alerted to a possible structure fire around 5:30am on Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000. The fire was in a small cottage located on Lake St. near Old Lake Shore Rd. in the Town of Evans NY.

The 911 Dispatcher related to responding units that it was unclear as to whether the structure was occupied.

Lake Erie Beach had responded to an auto accident earlier in the morning and some of their members were reportedly still at their fire hall when the alarm came in.

Lake Erie Beach Engine 1 arrived first and its crew stretched two attack lines, one to each door of the one-story cottage style residence. Heavy fire blew from both front windows and the front door, blanketing the  neighbor- hood with low hanging smoke.

Evans Center Engine 1 pulled up next while Lake Erie Beach E3 dropped a large diameter supply line from a hydrant a few hundred yards down Lake St.

Once the crew from Lake Erie Beach gained access through the front door they quickly knocked down the main body of fire and began their primary search. They soon returned to the front doorway with a female victim they reportedly had found on the bedroom floor.

Lake Erie Beach's interior crew reentered the house and again found a female victim - this time reportedly found in the closet of the only bedroom in the home.

Evans Center fire fighters assisted in dragging the victims away from the structure and began patient assessment on the front lawn.

Evans Center personnel used their Thermal Imaging Camera to conduct a secondary search of the entire structure which turned up no other victims.

Further knockdown of the fire ensued and the balance of the interior and contents were left intact so as not to impede fire investigation efforts.

The two females, age 23 and 25, resided in Angola and were cousins. One was pronounced dead at Lake Shore Hospital in Irving while the other died later that same afternoon after being transported by Mercy Flight Helicopter to the Erie County Medical Center.

The Angola Fire Department responded with an engine and their ambulance while ambulances from the Farnham Fire Department and Highland Hose Fire Company responded for standbys.

Erie County Sheriff Fire Investigators and Town of Evans Police were continuing the investigation to determine the cause and origin of the blaze.

The Western New York Stress Reduction Team provided a debriefing the following evening for the emergency personnel that had responded to this tragedy.
