Evans Center Makes Quick
Visit to the Village

August 29, 2000 --- Thanks to a quick response from Evans Center volunteers, a fire in a North Main Street residence in the Village of Angola was contained to a rear porch and entryway.

Evans Center's First Assistant Chief John Latimore, Acting Second Assistant Chief Bruce Green Jr. and Lt. Tim Szczepaniak were at their Station#1 when the alarm came in around 6:30pm. Firefighter Andy Poulson pulled in just as Engine 1 was being pulled out on to the pad and the four man crew responded.

Engine 1 was met at the scene by Chief Dennis Allen, Captain Tiger Schmittendorf and Firefighter Pat Davis. After connecting to the hydrant at Henry Drive and Main St. - the crew proceeded down the long driveway and up to the house. Angola First Assistant Chief Jay Addison informed them that the fire was in the rear and instructed them to make entry through the front of the house.

Green forced open the front door allowing Szczepaniak and Schmittendorf to drag an attack line through the living area and to the rear of the kitchen while Poulson tended the line from the doorway.

Knocking out the glass on the kitchen door, Szczepaniak was able to quickly hose down the flames containing the fire to the rear porch. Schmittendorf checked for extension using Evans Center's thermal imaging camera as other Angola and Evans Center units arrived and assisted in the operation.

Angola firefighters used fans to eject the smoke from the front of the house while two of their crew ascended an attic ladder to check for extension into the void space above the kitchen. Evans Center Firefighters Mike Goodrich and Green Jr. used a reciprocating saw to ventilate the peak face at the rear of the house. Other crews overhauled the kitchen area and laid salvage covers over the customer's furniture and belongings to prevent any further damage.

Once the fire was determined to be out, the two teams worked together to clean up hose lines and equipment, and returned to service a short while later. They were assisted at the scene by the Angola Fire Control Dispatch Center, the Village of Angola Police Department, Angola and Evans Center Fire Police and the Evans Center Ladies Auxiliary Squad 10.
