Evans
Center Vols Cut Six
from Head-on Crash
Mid-Town-May 24, 2001 – A collision on
Route 5 near Lake Street resulted in six patients being transported to area
hospitals around 4:30pm today.

Both
cars ended up against the westbound curb. Patient removal was executed
simultaneously from both cars. |
Evans
Center Firefighters used battery, gas and electric powered cutting tools
to remove the roofs of the two cars. |
The crash left the two autos on the westbound curb across from the Angola
Super-Freeze and VFW Post. A lone driver was pinned in the vehicle pointing
eastbound while there were five occupants of the vehicle facing westbound,
including four children.

vehicles were stabilized with chocks to prevent any undue movement during
the extrication process |
Once
the roof was removed the driver was carefully moved to a back board for
full spinal immobilization |
Patients
were systematically triaged and transported by the appropriate means |
The
two vehicles collided head-on.
The cause of the crash was under investigation by Evans Police |
Evans Center Firefighters made quick work of the extrication, using their
Hurst cutters, DeWalt battery powered Sawzalls and Milwaukee electric powered
Sawzalls to cut off and remove the roofs of the two cars in under 15 minutes.
The extrication team of Firefighters Mike Kauzala and Tiger Schmittendorf,
and Lt. Charlie Klepfer III were lead by Assistant Chiefs Bruce Green Jr. and
John Latimore. Chief Dennis Allen was the incident commander while fire police
members Andy Poulson and Jerry Clark provided traffic support.

The
volunteers worked as a team with Rural/Metro Paramedics to
triage, stabilize, remove and treat the patients |
In addition to their unit stationed full-time in Evans, Rural/Metro
dispatched several other Paramedic ambulances from nearby stations to
assist at the scene. One patient was transported to Children's Hospital via
Mercy Flight Helicopter while the others were transported to the Erie County Medical Center
and area hospitals by Evans Center, Rural/Metro and Lake Erie Beach Ambulances.
The Angola Fire Department set up the helicopter landing zone on the soccer
field at the nearby Lake Shore Middle School.
Evans Center was assisted at the scene by the Town of Evans Police Department
and the Angola Fire Control Dispatch Center.
