SUV Flips - hit by second vehicle

Mid-Town – April 20, 2002

Evans Center Firefighters were activated at 04:46am on Sunday morning for a report of a vehicle flipped over on Rte. 20 near Eden-Evans Center Road in their district. While enroute, they were advised that a second vehicle was now involved.

According to a Buffalo News report, an SUV was traveling eastbound on Rte. 20 when it left the roadway and then flipped over onto its top, resting in the westbound lane. According to the article, the driver was ejected from the vehicle.

As emergency crews were approaching the accident scene, a second westbound vehicle struck the overturned SUV head-on, sending it spinning across the road to the edge of the eastbound shoulder.

Fortunately, the driver of the SUV was not in the vehicle when it was struck by the second car. Debris from both vehicles littered the highway. Fire Police shut down traffic on Rte. 20 at Gowans Road and Eden-Evans Center Road until the roadway could be cleared.

Firefighters had to use their Hurst Jaws-of-Life hydraulic rescue tool to extricate the driver of the second vehicle. Both patients were transported to the Erie County Medical Center by Rural/Metro Paramedics.

According to the News article, both drivers were charged with driving while intoxicated by Town of Evans Police.

Evans Center was assisted at the scene by the Angola Fire Control Dispatch Center, Evans and Village of Angola Police Departments, and the Angola and Eden Fire Departments. The Highland Hose Fire Company was put on standby.
