Firefighters respond to
crash with no driver
MidTown – Town of Evans NY – January 1, 2004 ---
Angola Fire Control dispatched Evans Center Firefighters around 5:30 this
morning to the town's first fire/rescue call of 2004.
Chief Bruce Green Jr. and Assistant Chief
Tiger Schmittendorf rolled up on an auto accident on Bennett Road near the
intersection of Dennis Road. There they found a car in the middle of the roadway
with power lines hanging low across the street.
The unmanned vehicle had apparently lost control while
traveling east on Bennett Road towards Route 5, left the roadway and hit a power
pole. The pole snapped about 10 ft. up and the remainder of the pole fell
straight down, sticking into the ground with the wires still attached.
Firefighters shut down traffic on Bennett Road and at Route
5 while Evans Police officers looked for the accident victim. The male driver
was eventually located, unharmed, a few houses away from the accident scene.
Evans Center crews remained on location until after 7:30am
when Niagara Mohawk Power crews arrived to assess the damage. NiMo was on
location into the evening making the necessary repairs. Power to homes in the
area was not affected.
Responding with the chiefs were Lieutenants Mike Relosky
and Mike Kauzala, and Firefighters Dennis Allen, Matt Kreiger, Doug Milks and
Bob Zamrok. Evans Center was assisted at the scene by Rural/Metro Paramedics and
Pinto's Towing.
