Van Lights Up
at Auto Auction
MidTown – Town of Evans NY – April 13, 2004 --- An
unoccupied van started on fire in the parking lot of the Buffalo Auto Auction on
Southwestern Boulevard (rte. 20) near Eden-Evans Center Road.
An alert employee noticed the fire and other workers used a
high-lift to pull the van away from the other vehicles in the lot. That move
proved to be vital in preventing the fire from spreading to multiple vehicles.
Another worker discharged several dry-chemical fire
extinguishers into the passenger compartment of the delivery style van, knocking
down the bulk of the fire.
Remaining materials were just smoldering when Evans Center
Chiefs Schmittendorf and Green arrived on location. Green discharged his
extinguisher into the van to ensure that the fire was extinguished entirely.
Engine 1 arrived and overhauled the burned debris in the
front of the van. The heat from the fire broke through the windshield but the
fire was contained to the glove compartment area on the passenger side.
Units went in service a short while later. Evans Center was
assisted at the scene by the Angola Fire Control Dispatch Center and the Town of
Evans Police Department.
