Evans Center Makes
Early Thanksgiving Delivery
Town of Evans NY – MidTown – November 25, 2004 ---
A Town of Evans family has something extra to be thankful for
on this Thanksgiving morning.
Evans Center Volunteer Firefighters and Rural/Metro
Paramedics were dispatched around 7:40am for a 'woman in labor' in the parking
lot of the East Evans Country Depot gas station and convenient store.
When Rural Metro's Paramedic
Laura DeJoy and EMT Eric
Hamilton arrived, they found a woman in her twenties in labor,
accompanied by her mother. They quickly transferred her to their ambulance and
prepared for immediate transport to the hospital.
Evans Center's ambulance arrived just as Rural/Metro was
about to leave and EMT-I Dennis Allen jumped on board to assist DeJoy.
The ambulance whisked off towards Mercy Hospital in South
Buffalo. As the ambulance approached the Tifft Street exit off Route 5, the
woman's water broke and about a minute later a baby girl was born, just
moments away from the emergency room.
The baby girl, named Emma, was healthy despite a breech
delivery and arriving almost a month ahead of schedule. Both mother and baby were reported to be doing fine when the crew left the
hospital.
"The baby came so quickly, we didn't even have time to stop
the ambulance on the side of the road," said DeJoy, who is also an Evans Center
Firefighter. "This was my first delivery and I was very glad to have Dennis
[Allen] with me."
Allen has participated in three deliveries in his 33 years with the
fire company.
Evans Center was assisted at the scene by the Angola Fire
Control Dispatch Center, Town of Evans Police, and Rural/Metro Paramedics.
